Love - A Choice or an Emotion?

Throughout our lives, we're told a lot of lies about love. For example:

"Love means never having to say you're sorry."

"Love is blind."

And (drumroll!)... "You complete me."

(As if another human being can actually make an unfulfilled person become whole! Ridiculous!)

Whether they come in the form of song lyrics, movie lines, or cliche phrases passed down from generation to generation, these myths distort our thinking and cause us to develop unrealistic expectations of love.

And unrealistic expectations can set you up for major disappointment, which will prevent you from developing - and enjoying - real, healthy relationship.

Here's the myth: "When you're in love, you feel that butterflies-in-your-stomach, excited, happy, romantic, lovey-dovey feeling all the time. If that feeling goes away, something is WRONG."

When you accept this lie, no relationship of yours will ever stand a chance.

That's because a relationship between two human beings, each with their own flaws, is bound to have problems to work through and challenges to overcome.

Partners in a drama-free relationship don't place unrealistic expectations on love.

I recently heard a wise saying: "unrealistic expectations are planned resentments."

In other words, when you expect something impossible from someone you love (e.g. perfection), you're bound to end up resenting them for letting you down.

Because the truth is: Love is a CHOICE, not always an EMOTION.

In a relationship that lasts, each partner wakes up every day and actively CHOOSES to love their mate whether they feel the 'warm fuzzies' or not on that particular day.

Yes, of course there should be romance and passion and excitement, but not every moment is going to feel like a honeymoon in paradise. That's not the way life goes.

When you adjust your expectations accordingly, you'll find that yoursatisfaction with your relationship will increase.

Sure, you will get annoyed with one another. You will fight. You will struggle sometimes to figure out where the relationship is headed. But you'll realize that it's normal to do so and thatknowledge will give you the strength you need to work through it rather than throw a hissy-fit (drama!) - or worse - throw in the towel."

One other important point that I want to bring up is that this "floating-on-Cloud-9" feeling that many of us associate with love is actually a result of a chemical released in our brains during the first few months (or years, depending on the scientific study you refer to) with a new partner.

When you get into an established, long-term relationship with someone, a different chemical actually kicks in. One that makes you feel calmer, more secure and connected. This is a GOOD thing - it means that you can actually come down from your whirlwind of
can't-sleep-can't-eat-all-I-can-think-about-is-HIM or HER and begin to build a solid relationship based on who you really are as individuals and rooted in reality.

The downside is that those initial butterflies and excitement will subside quite a bit once you've hit this phase.

It's completely normal and, frankly, unavoidable.

The good news is that you can get a lot of that exciting feeling back. It just takes a little effort...

Plan special dates. Take a little getaway (even a spur-of-the-moment weekend trip will do the trick). Do something spontaneous, like leaving a note in his briefcase that says "Come straight home tonight - I have a surprise for you" and greet him with a home
cooked candlelight meal. All of these things will help to bring the butterflies back ... and keep them lasting long after your special moment is over.

7 Dating Tips for Men

Whether you are a man who's in a serious relationship or whether you have been "on a break" from dating, there are some common dating rules to follow when venturing into the dating jungle. These tips will prepare you for success, ease your comfort level and take the pressure off, so you'll enjoy the process of getting to know your date.

While women often have girlfriends to talk to for emotional support and to ease the date "jitters," most men won't call their best friend for a pep talk on Friday evening before taking a lady to dinner.

Aside from basic common sense advice (don't discuss your ex-wife during the first date; don't overcome nervousness by getting drunk, etc.), here are my top 7 tips for men to enjoy your date and have fun in the process.

1. Look and feel your best

Wear clothes that fit you and are contemporary. Women always look at your shoes, so no Nikes from the 90s. Buy a nice pair of pants and a great-looking shirt, if your wardrobe needs some updating. There is no excuse not to. If you can't take care of yourself, how are you going to take care of her?

2. Grooming and styling

Visit a barber or hair salon and get a great hair cut. If you don't have much hair, still get down to the salon, maybe get your head shaved. Or just get a professional shave, which will leave your face looking and feeling great. If you don't wear cologne, consider getting a fabulous smelling scent. Remember that the olfactory sense is our strongest and women love men who smell fresh and clean.

3. Be in the know

Make sure you are up to date with current affairs, watch the news and read quality papers. Women do not appreciate mental laziness. While most of us do not care, if you have an advanced degree, we want to be with a man who is interesting and mentally stimulating. Women respect men who are passionate and enjoy personal growth.

4. Develop interests outside of your business or career

If your only means of relaxation are regular visits to the local bar with your buddies or vegging out in front of the TV with a drink on a nightly basis, you are not likely to win any fair princess's heart. It might be time to take a step back and pick up some more productive habits. Working out or going for a run are great stress-relievers. You may even want to consider taking dance lessons. Most women love dancing and even if you are the world's worst dancer, she will adore you for making the effort.

5. Give up smoking. Now!

6. Never expect sex on a first date

If all you are after is sex, you have come to the wrong place for reading material. If you are looking for the girl of your dreams, there is nothing sexier than a patient man. You are easily capable of waiting for the right woman.

7. Start listening and stop talking

Keep your date interested but don't turn into a one-man circus. She will bore of you quickly because she wants to talk about herself too. Listen to things she tells you about her and remember them. When you enter a new relationship with a man, my number one tip is: take it slowly at first. Often, narcissistic and egocentric men are experts at sweeping you off your feet and the chemistry might be “off the charts.” If you find yourself “in love” before you know the man’s middle name, put on the brakes. If he is a good man, he will respect your desire to take it slow. If he is a control freak, he will show his true colors.

You may have to raise your awareness of “red flags” and learn to acknowledge them, rather than ignoring them or making excuses. Your family and friends can be excellent “reality checks” along the way. Typically, they have good radars for men that may not treat you well. Often, we are so blinded by emotions that we cannot or will not detect early “warning signs.”

Many people, when asked about past failed relationships, acknowledge that many of the problems that led to the separation or divorce, were apparent early on. The time to watch out for warning signs is before you develop a deep emotional attachment to the other person. Those warning signs are generally on “display” right at the beginning of a potential relationship, often as early as during the very first date.

You want to watch out for those 7 “non-negotiable traits:”

1. Addictions

An addiction is defined as a behavior that has negative effects on one’s health, work or relationships. Addictions can range from alcoholism, nicotine, prescription drugs, sexual habits, or gambling. Often, addicts are skilled liars, so watch out for behavioral signs. Having three or four drinks before dinner on a first date is certainly a warning sign and should not be ignored. You may want to keep your eyes open for erratic or frantic mannerisms, which could be a sign for prescription drug or other types of drug use and abuse.

2. Controlling Personality

This one might be harder to spot on the very first date. Listen to overly impulsive statements, such as “I have never felt this way before,” or “you are the type of woman I have been looking for my whole life.” Control freaks often move the relationship forward at breakneck speed, overwhelming and showering their love interest with excessive compliments, unrealistic and premature plans for the future, and wanting to spend too much time together too quickly.

3. Anger

Often, deep anger issues will manifest in extreme sarcasm or misplaced attempts at humor. Anger is the result of pain, frustration, fear or hurt. Watch out how the man handles everyday situations, such as dealing with a delay at a dinner reservation, or a mistake by the waiter on a drink order. Does he handle the issue calmly and respectfully, or with inappropriate hostility? You do not want to proceed in forming a relationship with a man who may fly off the handle at the slightest provocation.

4. Unresolved Prior Relationship Issues

While having relationship experience and past relationship failures is normal, you do not want to be with someone who clearly hasn’t moved on from the “ex-factor.” If your date monopolizes the conversation with stories about his ex, it is clearly a red flag. There is a time to discuss prior relationships, but it is highly inappropriate to bring up serious past relationship issues during the first dinner with a prospective partner. Any man who constantly talks about his last love is stuck in the past and clearly has unresolved issues that may require professional help.

5. Negativity

Negative men are like vampires. Instead of sucking blood, though, they will drain your energy, self-esteem and confidence. Life has a way of presenting many challenges to us along the way. And when these challenges appear, we need to be with a supportive partner and not with someone who will focus on how bad things are. Is your man complaining and blaming others for his circumstances? Does he make uplifting remarks about your hopes and dreams or is he making fun of you or “shutting you down.” Run, do not walk from any man who is toxic and has negative energy.

6. Lack of Financial Responsibility

On one of our early dates, Mr. Renaissance Man from California “forgot” his wallet, and, being a “nice girl,” I picked up the check. Now while things like that can happen on rare occasions, I should have recognized that a financially responsible man would have never let the woman pay for dinner (needless to say, I never got “reimbursed” and the pattern of “footing the bill” became the norm during our relationship).

Unless you want to be a “sugar mommy,” avoid mature men who never seem to “get it together” financially. If he is still having room-mates after age 40 or needs a “short-term loan” to help him through a “temporary rough patch,” run, do not walk. Just like loaning money to friends is generally not a good idea, lending money to a boyfriend is a recipe for trouble. While it may give you a temporary feeling of “doing good,” you will most likely regret your decision and end up frustrated and resentful, especially, if he doesn’t pay it back as promised (highly likely!).

7. Dishonesty

Just like you can’t be “a little pregnant,” there is no such thing as lying “a little.” Men who deliberately distort the truth or tell outright lies are not “relationship material.” Trust is one of the essential qualities for a healthy relationship and if you are with a partner who is dishonest and manipulative, I can guarantee that you will eventually pay the price in pain and heartache.

How to Attract Men Easily and Effortlessly (and Have Fun in the Process!)

Men are drawn to women whose energy is different from theirs. Just like the pull force of magnets, men are attracted to female energy. They are drawn to you by the way you look, smell and sound.

When I interview single women who are looking for committed relationships and marriage, I often hear comments like “I am independent and don’t need a man to take care of me” or “if he can’t handle a strong woman, then he is not the right one for me.”

While inner strength and self-confidence are attractive qualities that are desired by men, hard-nosed independence is a big turn-off. It sends the message to men that they are not needed, and if they feel that you don’t need them, why would they want to pursue a relationship with you?

Are you putting up an invisible wall to protect yourself from potential disappointment and hurt? Do you find fault with every man who shows interest before you even had a chance to get to know him? Are you secretly afraid to lose control by allowing yourself to be vulnerable and develop intimacy with a man?

Emotional and physical intimacy with the right man can be one of life’s greatest experiences. To develop that deep level of trust that will lead to true intimacy, you will have to relinquish control.

Men are drawn to you by your looks. But if your personality sends a “stay away” message, even a supermodel gorgeous appearance will not bring you a loving and lasting romantic relationship.

Think about what you enjoy about being with a man. A good man will cherish being with you. He will want to make sure you have a good time when the two of you are together, he will want to protect you, take care of you and be proud and happy to be with you. To allow this type of relationship to develop, you need to pay attention to your feminine side and let go of trying to be in control.

The next time a man approaches you, don’t “fast forward” the rest of your life in your head and make snap decisions (“he really isn’t my type”; “could he be the father of my children?” ), but relax, be open-minded and graceful. Smile (and take a deep breath). Make and keep eye contact. Let him take the lead. Allow him to ask for your number (even if he is not “your type”!). Practice being feminine. Last week, I attended an incredible inspirational seminar in Raleigh, North Carolina. Listening to the amazing line-up of speakers (Steve Forbes, Rudy Giuliani, Brian Tracy, General Colin Powell, and Lou Holtz among others) made me realize, once again, that learning is a life-long process and that we can always move to higher levels of achievement, regardless of our age, position, or background.

Most of the limitations in our life are self-imposed or we allow ourselves to be influenced by nay-sayers and negative thinkers.

Lou Holtz observed that there are only two types of people in this world: people who build others up and people who pull others down. How true that statement is!

How many times have you had a dream or a great idea and shared it with someone, only to be told "you can't do that" or "that will never work."

I remember a discussion I had with my ex-husband almost twenty years ago, when we first arrived in this country. Being from Europe, I missed espresso drinks and the coffee shops where one could stop by in the morning on the way to the office or linger with the newspaper on a Sunday afternoon. I thought it would be a great idea to open a European-style coffee shop in the Washington D.C. area (where we lived at the time). His response: "That is a crazy idea. Americans don't have a clue about good coffee. This would never work." Needless to say, I didn't pursue it any further.

Around the same time, a man from Seattle, named Howard Schultz, traveled to Milan and noticed coffee shops at every corner. He returned and launched Starbucks. As they say, the rest is history...

Everything starts with a dream! All success on the outside begins with thoughts and dreams. If you really want to improve your outer world, you must first improve your inner world. The most effective way to do this is through continuous growth and self-improvement.

Many of us spend more time planning a vacation than we do planning our lives. Learning does not stop when you finish school. Learning and growth are an on-going process and personal expansion is the best thing you can do for yourself.

Since those early days of having one of my dreams shut down, I have come a long way, learning many of life's lessons through the "School of Hard Knocks" (haven't we all?).

Fortunately, there is a better way. When you take the time to build a strong foundation of optimism, energy and discipline, you can create tremendous changes in your life. Take the time to learn from other people. I once read that if you want to be rich, don't study the poor. While facetious, this is actually a very valuable point.

If you want to be successful, study other successful people. Read books about people you admire and learn about their lives.

Are all your friends single and complain about the fact that there aren't any good men out there? Expand your circle and include some happily married couples (yes, they exist!). Learn how they created their relationship.

Elevate your mind and body to their highest level by nurturing your soul. Enjoy quiet time every day. Turn off the TV! Write down your goals and dreams. Identify the things (or people) that are holding you back.

The best investment you can make is in yourself! Do a few things every day to get better. Little things, consistently applied, make a big difference in the long run.

The Japanese have a concept called "kaizen," which means constant and never-ending improvement. Start practicing "kaizen" today.

Start to live with passion, energy and limitless enthusiasm.

For what lies behind you and what lies in front of you matters little compared to what lies within you!

Houston is near and dear to my heart, as I have many good friends who live in this vibrant and exciting city. In fact, during my last visit, I got to know a fellow German who owns a fabulous restaurant, named "Bistro Le Cep" (off the beaten path at 11112 Westheimer). "Surround Yourself With Good Energy" by Ali Brown

Have you ever felt down after chatting with a friend or coworker? You may have felt fine before the conversation, but now, after hearing them complain about the weather, the economy, and a demanding neighbor or mother-in-law, you're starting to feel kind of cranky yourself, as if their negativity were somehow contagious.

Actually, you can catch a negative (or positive) attitude from the people around you. According to the well-known psychiatrist and energy guru Dr. Judith Orloff, who wrote the bestseller Positive Energy, our bodies are made of flesh and blood, but they're also composed of energy fields. Negative energy like fear, anger, and hopelessness drags us down and drain our energy, but positive energy, like compassion, courage, and forgiveness, improves our mood and our well-being.

The law of attraction states that people either sense our positive energy and gravitate towards us, or they feel our negative energy and shy away from us. Those around us influence how we feel and can even impact the direction our lives take. Positive people can improve your life, while negative people (also called "energy vampires") just drag you down.

"Energy vampires" suck the life out of you. Spending time with people who constantly complain or make negative remarks only makes us feel listless and despondent. These "energy vampires" tell us we'll never get our business off the ground or that our dreams are unrealistic (possibly because they can't bear to see others succeed where they have failed). Spend too much time with a complainer and you'll start to believe what they tell you.

Positive people energize you. The more time you spend surrounded by positive people, the more you'll internalize their cheerful, upbeat attitude and start spreading it around. Positive people make your goals seem attainable and give you a boost of energy when you need it. They don't dwell on small setbacks or waste time complaining about things that are within their power to change. With an open heart, an open mind, and a willingness to try new things, they can handle virtually anything.

While we sometimes have to deal with negative coworkers or relatives, it's up to us to choose the other people in our lives. Ask yourself how you feel after spending time with someone. Do you feel energized and inspired? Or does lunch with a certain "friend" leave you feeling restless and unfulfilled?

If the latter, then it's time to develop friendships with people who support your goals and spread positive energy. These people will provide wisdom in times of trouble and inspire you to reach greater heights in moments on self-doubt. Seek our people and organizations that promote action and service to the community, because there is nothing more uplifting than helping others.

Just read a wonderful piece of advice on relationships in the new issue of "In Style" magazine (yes, "In Style"!).

Michelle Pfeiffer, who looks absolutely stunning at 51, shared this with the readers: "Can you imagine, for 20 years, trying to stay mysterious in your relationship? That's the worst advice I've ever heard. Of all the people in your life you don't want to hide from, it's your partner. One of the reasons my marriage is successful, I think, is that we are completely comfortable around each other and don't feel the need to hide aspects of ourselves."

Bravo, Michelle! Well said. I believe that the best relationships are the ones where we can be ourselves and feel accepted and loved.

I am re-reading a wonderful book that has helped me tremendously during some challenging times in my own life: "Welcome to your Crisis" by Laura Day.

It is an inspiring guide that shows readers how to use life's worst moments to create one's best future.

In my own life, I have certainly faced challenges, from the end of my first marriage in the mid 90s to leaving a well-paying career in money management in California to starting my own business. But nothing prepared me for being newly remarried and experiencing the loss of my husband's logistics business in 2008.

It would have been easy to assume the victim role, as our life as we knew it fell apart and false accusations were disseminated. Yet, I have always believed that letting go and moving on are two crucial skills in creating your best life.

As I now focus on my passion to help extraordinary singles nationwide to meet their match, I derive tremendous joy and satisfaction in facilitating successful introductions.

Many members join Sterling Introductions after experiencing crises in their lives, such as divorce or the loss of a loved one. I deeply empathize with the challenge of reinventing one’s life and am grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of my members’ life journeys.

It is never the events of our lives, but the meaning we attach to the events that shapes us and our future. Some individuals go through extreme personal upheavals and use their tribulations to excel, while others allow themselves to be beaten down, defeated and stuck in the past.

The Importance of Family

As this weekend is coming to a close, I am grateful about the time I was able to spend with family members over the past three weeks.

My parents visited from Germany and we also had the pleasure of welcoming my husband's children and their families/friends. Our home was filled with fun and laughter and we had the opportunity to explore Atlanta as "tourists." Much to our surprise, the Wine Country of Georgia (just one hour away from the city) is worth a trip. The views are spectacular and the wines are (to my surprise!) delightful.

We will have a few more days in the company of family and then our life will quiet down again...

I cherish the moments with our loved ones!

Matchmaking Redefined - The Sterling Introductions Experience

I am often asked about the matchmaking process and would like to share some insights.

Sterling Introductions offers individual introductions only.

We do not host socials where gentlemen may choose ladies from a "pool" of available candidates. Our service is very private and discrete. I personally select and approve all introductions.

We only share first names when providing an introduction and only when both members agree to meet, do we provide the lady's phone number to the gentleman.

Again, confidentiality and privacy are paramount. Sterling Introductions has many prominent members and it is our commitment to protect each member's identity.

We believe that meaningful relationships are developed between two members over time.

I encourage all members to explore a potential relationship past the first date. Often, emotions such as nervousness may play into an initial meeting between two individuals. It may take several dates to know, if one is interested in pursuing a relationship.

We offer unlimited introductions during the membership period

It is my goal to find the right match for each of my members. However, I cannot predict chemistry (if I did, I would probably be wealthier than Bill Gates!). During the matchmaking process, I take into consideration one's values, character, family background, career path, interests and hobbies, as well as desired characteristics in a partner. Often, successful relationships are formed after the very first introduction. However, if members decide that they are not right for each other, I will start the matching process again.... until we achieve success!

"The Rules" Redefined - A Matchmaker's Perspective

Many of you may remember (or abide by) a relationship advice book from the 90's, entitled "The Rules." It teaches women to follow a set of strict "rules" with the ultimate goal to get a husband. While I'm a firm believer that a gentleman should pursue a lady during the dating and mating process, I think that some of the "rules" do a disservice to single ladies who would like to meet "Mr. Right."

For example, "The Rules" state that you should never call a man, or return his call. Period. Now, I advise my female members to let the gentleman pursue and not the other way around. That being said, let's examine this "rule" in today's busy environment. If a gentleman calls the lady and leaves a message, should she return his call? Absolutely! He has taken time out of his busy day to call her, so applying common sense and common courtesy, she should return the call.

Is it okay for her to pick up the phone and initiate the call? Absolutely not. If he is interested, he will call.

Another "rule" addresses long-distance dating, a common occurence in the matchmaking world. This "rule" firmly says that the gentleman ought to visit the lady at least three times where she lives, before she may visit him. Once again, I advocate common sense. Sometimes, it may make sense to meet at a "mid-way point" (for example, if the gentleman lives on the East Coast, and she resides out West). And if the gentleman invites the lady to visit him: why not?

Let's remember the basic premise of dating: to get to know one another and to have fun in the process.

Let's not make a budding relationship unnecessarily complicated by governing it with "rules." Enjoy yourself and be yourself! That is one rule in my book...

Matchmaker's Book Tips

On this rainy Atlanta Saturday, I'd like to share some book tips. These are some of my recent reads (and they have nothing to do with matchmaking - sorry, if the header of this post lead you to believe that!)

"Losing my Virginity," the tongue-in-cheek titled autobiography by Richard Branson, Virgin's swashbuckling chairman, is an inspiring read for any business owner. His larger than life persona and passion for life jumps off the pages and makes the book a breezy pageturner. The biggest lesson: whatever it is you do, give it your all and have fun!

"The Billionaire's Vinegar" by Benjamin Wallace. Written with literary intelligence, this is the tale of the most expensive bottle of wine ever sold, which was supposedly owned by Thomas Jefferson. I won't spoil it for you by giving away the whole plot - pick up a copy and take a mesmerizing ride through the history of wine.

and lastly, another essential read for those who would like to manage their time better (and who doesn't?):

"No B.S. Time Management for Entrepreneurs" by Dan Kennedy.
Dan Kennedy, for those of you who are not familiar with his books, is as controversial as he is brilliant. Sarcastic, politically incorrect, and not afraid to ruffle feathers, Dan Kennedy is an entrepreneur, writer, and speaker, who's been called "the Professor of Harsh Realities". His No B.S. business books are legendary and his time management book is another classic. The opening line reads: "Wimps and Willie Lomans - beware!
